Several years ago I took part in National Novel Writing Month, and with the help of several encouraging friends both in person and on the interwebs, I created a work I called NAWASHI. It’s the story of this guy who discovers he has a talent for rope, and more than that, he’s got access to energies (whether he wants it or not) when he engages in his kink. There’s violence, friendship, torture, rope bondage, boobies, spankings, and lots and lots of sex.
And guess what? You get it for free.
Yep, I offered it free for a while back in the day, and then decided (when I started publishing it through LuLu.com) that I’d offer it as a “digital download” for paying customers. I’ve sold quite a few actual books (click on the link to get yours!), both in person and via LuLu, but the digital stuff? Not so much.
And that’s ok. In the spirit of Cory Doctorow, I’m offering you the original manuscript in all its barely-edited glory. Feel free to email it to friends, print it out, quote from it – just don’t sell it, ok? And if you do quote it, or try to re-enact it, or write fiction or take photos based on it, give me a little credit. I’d also love to hear from you, what you thought of it, etc.
But Graydancer, won’t that make your book sales go down?
Um, I doubt it, since book sales weren’t all that UP to begin with. More than that, I am in the process of re-writing it, and the actual copy that my agent will send to the publishers will be much more robust and complete than this one – almost a totally different book.
Meanwhile, though, I’m more than happy to have people putting my book into various formats (mobipocket, kindle, etc) and spreading the luv. So download the MS Word doc version, and convert it to your hearts content, as long as you go ahead and follow the Creative Commons License. And if you DO convert it, send me the file, I’ll link it here, along with my profuse thanks.
Dan Gudy has jumpstarted this process, providing it in the following formats (many thanks, Dan!)
Nawashi – Graydancer.lrf – for the Sony PRS-500 and 505.
Graydancer-Nawashi.mobi – for the Mobipocket Reader on all supported platforms.
Nawashi – Graydancer.epub – the new “industry standard”, for whatever that may be worth.
Graydancer-Nawashi.fb2 – an XML-based ebook format developed and mainly used in Russia
What about other books?
Well, there are two more books completed and in the editing process. You can hear the direct sequel to NAWASHI on Podiobooks.com. It’s called JUJUN and continues right where NAWASHI ends (so no hate mail about cliffhangers!).
There’s also my most recent Nanowrimo endeavor, KUMIR, which is on the shelf waiting to be edited. Plans are that all three books will be offered for free via Podiobooks and direct e-book download, and then print copies will be available for purchase, one way or another.
What exactly does your Creative Commons License allow?
Why, thank you for asking. It allows the following:
This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon my work non-commercially, as long as they credit me (Graydancer) and license their new creations under the identical terms. Others can download and redistribute your work just like the by-nc-nd license, but they can also translate, make remixes, and produce new stories based on your work. All new work based on mine will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also be non-commercial in nature.
If you want more info (and really, CC makes for fascinating reading) I’d refer you to the website.
But Graydancer, we really want you to keep writing and we know you have to eat…don’t you want our money?
Awww, that’s sweet, really, it is. Yes, I love your money – but times are tight these days, and I have faith that those who can donate, or sponsor, or join the Graydancer’s Monthly Cuppa Club, or even just use the little tipjoy link at the end of every post, will do so. And meanwhile, the benefits I get from hearing about people enjoying my work far outweigh any cash value.
Well, almost any cash value. Make me an offer…
