Coming soon to a Cable Channel Near You…

I made some references a while back to some “shooting” and “filming” I was doing in Baltimore. At the time I was prohibited from talking about what I was doing, but with the release of the following “teaser” video, it can be revealed: I wasn’t shooting so much as being shot by a documentary team for “Our America with Lisa Ling“, a cable series in its third season on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

Take a look at the teaser:

Lisa Ling goes beyond the best-selling fantasy novel, Fifty Shades of Grey, to explore the real world of BDSM: bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, and sado-masochism. What she finds is a kinky truth far more complicated than fiction.

Watch the first 5 minutes of the season premiere before its television debut, then, tune in for the premiere of Our America with Lisa Ling on Tuesday, January 22nd at 10/9c, only on OWN.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was a little nervous about this – the NCSF has shared a number of horror stories about people who have been outed by the media, even with the best of intentions, and had things go amiss. In addition, while I’m out to my sisters, my parents have been living in a state of willful ignorance. I respect their choice with that and am sorry that this show may make it harder to ignore.

On the other hand, from the very beginning when the production company contacted me (through my work for the Kink Academy) they were friendly, professional, and open minded. I’ve worked professionally with many different levels of the TV complex, from HBO to community television, and these people seemed friendly, competent, and most of all seemed to want to actually tell the truth about BDSM and kink. Or, at least, tell a truth, or a few, to show where 50 Shades got it right and got it wrong.

With the generous cooperation of Poetic Desires and Hammer & Roxie as well as the Playhouse in Baltimore, we got to shoot a hot bootblacking/cigar/rope scene, and then talk extensively about the play, the relationship, and our own kinky histories for the documentary. Of course most of it will end up on the cutting room floor, but the great thing about the web is that there can be more content added later on.

I haven’t seen the final cut – nor will I until the 22nd – but I’m fairly confident that Lisa Ling and the Our America crew will have done a good job of presenting What It Is We Do (“We” being me and Poetic, at least) in as fair a way as possible, and as the producer said to me, “…at least people may think about this kind of thing with a wider perception than just that book.”

We’ll see what happens. Let me know if you watch it, and what you think!
