Ganymancer and Graydancer at Rope Academy

Ganymancer and Graydancer at Rope Academy

You asked in your ropecast, so I thought I’d write in telling you what I get out of rope…

When I’m suspended in rope, I am able to be entirely present in the moment.  It’s not like that the entire time, to be sure – my insecurities pop up, I hear the sounds of people around me, I see people around me, I wonder what they’re thinking of me, I hear a laugh and maybe wonder if they’re laughing at me – but for most of the time, I’m in the moment.  I’m not thinking about work, about how my ex did me wrong, about things I should have said or shouldn’t have said… When I’m flying, these worries are off my mind.

I’m in my body.  A wealth of sensations are available to me.  Beyond the rope itself, beyond the pressure and the texture, I feel weight borne by my body in ways it usually isn’t, unfamiliar motion, and those limbs which aren’t entirely fixed have limitations on their range of motion.  The limbs that are completely bound have their own sensations, which I can change and play with.  And as I spin I can experience vertigo and dizziness and disorientation, and completely change my experience by lowering or raising or turning my head.

It also gives me a unique opportunity to practice the disciplines of my body – flexing or relaxing muscles, or intentionally increasing or decreasing circulation to some part of my body; breathing with different parts of my lungs; finding different ways to bear or distribute my weight in an entirely new context; channeling the pain or discomfort I feel, not unlike receiving a flogging but without breaks, without pause…

And sometimes, rope is a hug that will not relent.  It is carefully applied attention.  It is affection that continues, moves with me, and spreads as more rope is added.  As my whole body, from the hair on my head, down my chest, around my hips and my legs, and even my toes, all are bound, my skin is constantly telling me about all of that attention I have received.  And then the manhandling starts.

And all that’s just from this past weekend…  =]  It’s been on my mind.

When I put rope on others, it’s more complicated for me.  I find it less physical, more mental, emotional, social.  When I make someone unable to move, thoroughly vulnerable, I get a rush of power and responsibility.  Usually when I top in any form it involves being in a caretaker role, but with secure bondage it immediately starts involving even the most trivial of responsibilities.  Whether on the scale of scratching an itch or the scale of moving to a better (or worse) position, the power exchange moves immediately from “I could conceivably fight you off at any moment” to “if I changed my mind there is nothing I could do without your help.”

And that’s not even to mention how the changes which rope causes in the bottom influence me…  if I’m doing something to a partner which clearly turns them on, that gets me going too.  So, horny rope bottoms make it better.

But much of what I’ve said here could be said about bondage other than rope…  I guess the three big differences for me are: first, when looking at a rope one can’t tell what will happen next.  Second, the application of it requires attention and knowledge beyond “wrist goes in, velcro closes” so it feels more intentional, more of an act of creation than the use of a specialized tool.  Third, the process of putting it on, whether it takes only a few moments or a long time, feels like a journey – I guess I’d make a parallel to the difference between flying for an hour vs walking four hours; even if I haven’t traveled as far, I feel like I’ve actually gone somewhere different. It’s liminal.

Thanks for binding me and making me fly.

Warmly,

Ganymancer

P.S. Happy Birthday Ropecast!

FILTH II at the Inferno in Madison WI March 12, 2010Say, did you hear about FILTH II, the upcoming show at the Inferno in Madison? I’m very excited, because it’s going to mean my return to performance art (as opposed to the fun stuff in burlesque, etc).

I’m going to be working with Miss Behavin’ and also Naiia to do two works. The second isn’t titled yet, but the first, with Miss Behavin’, is called “WITNESS” and it’s based on a concept I read in Alastair Reynold’s House of Suns.

In it, a woman expresses what I actually could see as a valid argument for monogamy (not that “cuz I like monogamy” isn’t valid, this one is just more logical to my mind). She talks about the idea of sharing an experience, just the two of you – in the book, I believe she uses a sunset as an example – and the fact that by sharing that experience, you each get 1/2 a memory – and that the full memory of that experience will only be complete when the two of you are together.

I am intrigued by this idea, and it forms the basis for the work “WITNESS.” Special thanks to the folks at the Secret Ingredient Collective, especially Delicate Mich, for re-inspiring me.

An Unexpected Saturday

by Scott

One of our local rope gurus, Matt, invited Club X to Graydancer’s Ropetastic Unconference Extravaganza. On Saturday, January 16th, Cobi, our Club X Workshop Coordinator, and I walked into a packed house of 50+ people, some familiar local faces but others from Los Angeles, Kansas City and even one couple from Canada. Graydancer, from Wisconsin, began the day with an explanation of his concept for the conference.  This is an excerpt taken from Graydancer’s Blog:

“The concept of the unconference (and what is known as “open space technologies”) came from the tech & business fields, where some people noticed that while events might have one or two presenters who gave interesting topics, most of the really stimulating and constructive conversations were spur-of-the-moment pickup meetings between chance individuals who happened to chat during a coffee or meal break, or hang out in the hotel bar or lobby later. They began to wonder if there could perhaps be a conference that was entirely made up of these kinds of moments.”

Graydancer proceeded to hand out sticky pad sheets of paper where one could put a topic or technique they wanted to present or facilitate.  The wall first filled up slowly but gained speed with around 20 topics ranging from suspension bondage and a one handed knot to takedowns, interesting BDSM implements and breath play. These discussions and demonstrations were to be taught by local and non-local kinky people, not necessarily experts but by people with various skills and experience sharing what they had picked up and what worked for them. I was amazed and inspired, and I learned how to properly perform breath play. There were 2-4 demonstrations and seminars happening at the same time that lasted from 15 minutes to around two hours, depending on how long it took to share the technique or idea. The agenda was developed by the skills of the attendees and the length was however long it needed to take.

What started out as apprehension turned into an experience of a lifetime that taught me not only new skills but also that my preconceived notions often are my limitation to my BDSM and life path growth. Thank you, Matt, for the opportunity to be a part of this.

The GRUE aint the only game in town- KinkForAll Providence RI!

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Im not the only one embracing the Unconference model for events – in fact, there at least two other events that use Open Space methods to have very different but exciting events. Sex 2.0 is one, and Kink For All is celebrating its 5th incarnation in Providence RI. Look for the Twitter hashtag #kfapvd, or do like I did and visit http://saraeileen.com/blog/2010/02/live-blog-kinkforall-providence-kfapvd/ where Sara Eileen is liveblogging the event.

Im very curious to get to one of these -the 20 minutes, no more! format sounds like a pretty intense creative constraint, and I can see why people come out of them practically exploding with ideas…

I am an idiot

Thursday, December 15th, 2005

So, this great photographer, Mitchel Evans not only contributed a fantastic photo (and two more) to my Zen Bondage Garden, but he also appreciated my commentary on his photography so much that he sent me a large print of that very photo. It’s proudly displayed right now in my bedroom, soon to be moved to my studio.

And me, dork that I am, called him “Mitchell Gant” in one of my podcasts. Or in a post, not sure which. But when someone emailed me asking about it, and I realized my error…man, did I feel dumb.

Sorry about that, Mitchel. I will be sure to correct the error in this weeks podcast, as well as here.

Perhaps this is why I got the bad karma of being excluded from Melissa Gira’s latest podcast, where she listed off a bunch of adult casts and…well, I wasn’t there. Not a bit.

I’m not hurt. Really.
